Be Unpredictable

Writer: The Responsive CanineThe Responsive Canine

One way dogs learn is through pairing and associations. Therefore, the more predictable you are, the more your dog will learn exactly what comes next. For example, picking up the leash means walkies, a knock on the door means visitors, the jingle of keys means you're leaving, a visit to the vet means an injection etc. These associations can trigger a range of emotions and behaviours in a dog.

Being unpredictable helps your dog to maintain calmness in a variety of situations as it removes the anticipation of what is to come. So, mix things up and don't ever become too predictable.

*Caution: If your dog has existing behavioural problems, consult us before considering the above.
